On King – Stephen King That Is………….

Either this man can really write or he’s a sorcerer of some sort.

I guess you could say I’m a fan from way back – I started reading his books in high school.

I’m a fan, but far, far from a number one fan.

I’ve only read a small portion of his over 50 pieces of writing. I have no troubles confessing that I’ve read some of his books I either couldn’t get into and quit or wish I had (Tommy Knockers).

Still……………

Sometimes I am amazed by this man. I on a whim picked up Lisey’s Story.

Here’s the thing – this book is a bit hard to follow and really figure out for the first hundred pages or so……..

I didn't really know what I was even reading. Truthfully I didn’t head over heels love the book. I liked it, it was okay.

Yet………..

I couldn’t put it down, I felt compelled – as if a literal spell had been cast upon me.

This phenomenon spurred many coffee chats with my fellow buddies who spend a great amount of time reading.

Here is what I’ve decided. Poor Stephen King does not get the credit he deserves.

I know, I know he’s famous and makes oodles of money – that isn’t all there is to credit.

So many folks consider him fluffy, garbage and a waste of time.

He was labelled years ago as a horror writer – this simply is not accurate or true……

Yes he has some good great horror stories and some totally cheesy not so great horror stories.

However there are a pile of his books you would not be able to call horror – in fact some are wrapped around some fairly persuasive love stories!!

There are also a lot of books that are not filled with sex, drugs, and cussing - I know some think that is all he is, but really it is not at all accurate!

I don’t think you can throw this man into a category – I think he’s a story teller, some of his stories will appeal to some and some won’t appeal to others.

I don’t believe he is fluffy, untalented or garbage.

I often wonder if he will ever get the credit he deserves – maybe after he’s gone……………..

  1. I 100% agree. I have read almost all of his books. And yes there are ones that are nasty or just plain bad, but for the most part, he is a plain story teller, and does it well....My faves are under the dome, the stand of course, and the one that goes back in time....can't remember what its called.

  2. Well, it's a good thing I read this post because I do not give him the credit he deserves. I can not deal with horror anything, so I have never attempted to read anything by him because I just assumed it was all horror.

  3. I haven't read any of his book either :\ I tried a couple but could never get into them.

  4. Been a fan for many years and have read most (if not all) his books. Agreed some aren't all that great, while others are out and out horror, but vast majority might be classed as pyschological thrillers or suspense. He is a classic story teller and (I feel) falls in the category of Poe. He is the absolute best and a model for many other authors.
